Advices for use of snow chains

Cars, SUV, 4x4 and Vans:

Herewith please find some information about the use of snow chains: in any case always refer to the „mounting and fitting instructions“ of your snow chains prior to their use.

  • Before buying chains, make sure that the car’s tyre size is shown on the pack label.
  • Always carefully read information relating to snow chains in the vehicle “Use and maintenance manual” to check whether there are any limitations to use of chains. It is advisable to try out fitting and removing the snow chains at least once in a comfortable, dry place, before using them, in order to check that they fit properly on the tyres and to practice fitting them.
  • Fit the snow chains on the drive wheels. If you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, chains must be fitted on all four wheels.
  • Do not exceed a speed of 50 km/h when chains are fitted.
  • When it is necessary to use snow chains, try to fit them in a safe place, well away from the carriageway and, if possible, with the car on a level surface.(Remember to wear an approved reflective waistcoat).
  • With conventional chains, it is necessary to stop after driving about 100 metres to retension them. This operation is not necessary when using Weissenfels patented, self-tensioning chains with "Clack&Go™" technology (M90, M45, M44, M43, M32 and RTS).
  • Drive smoothly and try to change gear as little as possible. Always avoid taking bends at excessive speed, dangerous overtaking, sudden acceleration and sharp braking.
  • On icy roads, chains loose their effectiveness: you should therefore drive slowly, using the gears for braking.
  • On reaching a road surface that is free of snow, drive at a moderate speed to avoid damage to the car due to vibrations.
  • Remove the chains as soon as possible to avoid premature wear.Always check the condition of the chains before using them. In the event of any defect, stop immediately and remove the chains.
  • To keep the chains in good condition, wash them under running water after use and allow them to dry at ambient temperature before placing them back in their pack.
